About Elder Initiation

What is Elder Initiation in the Dagara Tradition?

"Elders, like the ancestors," Malidoma says "are expected to identify and address what is not working in the village, not to give compliments and praise behavior. They take up the job of executing tasks forwarded to them by the ancestors. Elders do not express energy, they hold it. The elder holds the space within which each villager's gift operates and encourages it with blessings and with silent nods."

"Mastering the powers of an elder," Malidoma continues, "is a process that takes place slowly over years at the harsh school of life where the storms of trials and tribulations, of pain and suffering solidify and make sacred the mind, body, and soul of a person. When a person like this speaks, it is as if the Other World is speaking. The pull to listen is natural to one who is familiar with the sound of Spirit. This is also why elders are more accountable than anyone else in the village. But this accountability is even greater in the Other World than in this world because every day brings the elder closer to the world of Spirit and thus more distant from this world, hence this sense of increased sacredness associated with the voice of an elder. The pull to the Other World also explains the gradual distaste an elder develops for involvement in the ordinary world."

"The greatest responsibility of the elder is leading rituals. Among these rituals are those of birth and death. Elders are also keepers of shrines. A shrine is like the ancestral earthly retreat for ancestors. Its caretaker must in most cases be an elder or designated by an elder."

Elder initiation in the Dagara tradition is a declaration and engagement of one's willingness to awaken to the call of one's own ancestors and serve community, family, friends, even strangers. In short, an elder serves humanity. An elder is able to 'hear' the ancestors and deliver the necessary wisdom and medicine to the village. It begins with a formal set of rituals guided by initiated elders over a two-week process. Thereafter, the initiation will unfold for years while the maturation process reveals itself.

What should I consider if I want to apply?

Elder Initiation is a mysterious and challenging undertaking. The process with Spirit and the Other World really begins when you step up and apply. Therefore, please take time to carefully consider this life-long commitment. Allow yourself time to contemplate and ask questions. Important practical factors to consider are:

  • I am comfortable with my home and work for the next three years.
  • I have a committed partner, family and/or solid community.
  • I am financially stable for the next few years.
  • I am in good health
  • I understand what it means to be an elder in the Dagara tradition.

If you answered no to one or more of these statements, then it is best to explore this decision with the support of elders in the community.
